Bands like Thelma and the Sleaze gave Denton a run for their money…

Getting a lil SXSW on the Side…

Not all can afford to go to SXSW. Heck, some musicians performing in SXSW may be playing couch-claim-and save-me-a-spot-please at a kind soul's casita on the day before or the day after. At $1925, a Platinum badge may be higher than some rent, folks...including utilities. This is why the SXSW Spillover Show at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio in Denton, Texas was everything to a little music lover like me without the heavy swipe of a credit card. A ten dollar cover gave fans all access to bands from all over the US of A and beyond. If only I hadn't come in at the tail of Gus Englehorn's (Quebec) set. (Shame on me for wanting a Gyro 360 gyro bowl and feta fries before heading to Rubber Gloves.) He was singing "Tarantula" alongside a brunette drummer. His presence was nostalgic and as he looked up, I wanted to look up and see what he was looking at, but then I realized it could be that look up when you feel the music and answer to the call of it.

Egg Drop Soup band released a brand new single "Regicide" on the night of the show, and the drummer, a music fanatic, encouraged fans to check out Godcaster before their own set began, and what a worthy order! Godcaster's scratch your head, dance, and sing softly and loudly all out once felt good on a slightly icy-chilly cold-for-a-Texan Denton night. The six-piece human set performed and took turns being centerstage. The Egg Drop Soup drummer was jamming out to all the other bands and even grabbed a cowbell to join in with the close out of Thelma and the Sleaze (TATS). Nashville's TATS were making the stage their territory with high-octave energy, cowboy hat, mounting amps, popping-knuckles, and camel-toe jeans as claimed by the lead singer. Plastic angels donning blonde hair heralded the crown of the stage giving soft gothic vibes with a green and white Thelma sign on stage. I felt Nashville energy. Never been. It's on my list. I hope the lead singer was able to make the "Indian food parfait" the day after that she so hoped for.

Closing the night out was Ed Schradar's Music Beat. He wore a gray turtleneck and a crystal necklace as he danced to the music beat. He mentioned donuts, and how the band plays a game of sorts and has to buy all other  bandmates donuts if they lose. He made me crave "ice cold donuts'' as he sang about it and a new crystal necklace. The bassist was adding so much oomph with each beat. All the acts I got to see were truly amazing. I can't wait to see them again and damage my eardrums a little more all for the love of music. This "SXSW Spillover Show" gave a goldeny platinum experience without the drive south to Austin. If you're ever in Denton, check out Rubber Gloves, and support music venues and artists.
